Our breeding program operates from a dedicated, geographically isolated breeding yard—separate from our production hives. This isolation is critical: it ensures our virgin queens mate only with drones from our selected genetic lines, preserving the traits we've spent over a decade cultivating.
Every nuc we sell starts here. From the moment a larva is selected for grafting to the day a colony leaves our yard, it's tracked, evaluated, and held to our quality standards. This is why beekeepers across the region trust Jacobs Haven nucs to start—or grow—their apiaries.
The Process
From Colony to Nuc
Four deliberate steps separate an average nuc from a Jacobs Haven nuc.
Colony Selection
Each season, we evaluate every colony in our 80+ hive operation, selecting only the top performers as breeding stock. We score for honey production, gentleness, overwintering success, disease resistance, and brood vitality.
Queen Rearing
Larvae from our best colonies are grafted into queen cups and raised in cell-builder colonies. Each virgin queen is marked and tracked from the moment she emerges.
Controlled Mating
Our breeding yard is geographically isolated to ensure queens mate with selected drone genetics. This preserves the traits we've cultivated over 15 years—gentle temperament, productivity, and hardiness.
Nuc Production
Proven, mated queens are introduced into 5-frame nucs with established brood, nurse bees, and honey stores. Each nuc is given a full evaluation period before it's approved for sale.
